The Road Home is an organization founded back in 1923 with the goal of helping stranded travelers. In 1988, the first shelter of the Road Home was built on 210 S. Rio Grande Street, Salt Lake City. October of 2001 saw the name change from Travelers Aid Society to The Road Home as the mission changed to help against homelessness. The 999 South Main Street location has been there since 2007 where it was formerly a Holiday Inn hotel. Palmer Court has 201 rooms with 36 of them being family rooms.
The Road Home offers a place to stay for homeless people who are hoping for a permanent residence to stay. They don’t just offer residence, but also clothing and bedding from donations. They take nonperishable food, books, movies, and just about anything that could help the homeless. The Road home is always looking for volunteers and others who are willing to help out the homeless.
This is the first week that Real Salt Lake has participated in the Miller week of service. Ali Anderson from the Miller Company said, “I love this week because it’s just an opportunity to give back and it’s also a great reminder of the great company that I work for and the generosity of the Miller Family”.
Jake Miller, a training manager at the Megaplex, stated “Every year for a week of service, I look forward to connecting with the community and seeing how the employees at our company come together to do good”.
Val Allyse, one of the volunteer coordinators, had this to say about the event. “I’ve worked at the Road Home 11 months. I’ve been volunteering for my whole life. I started volunteering when I was in elementary school. The Road Home is to make homelessness rare, to make it nonrecurring, and to make it very short term”.
Val stated that the Road Home and the Miller Company have worked together for a long time yet this is the first time Real Salt Lake have come to this specific establishment. She was very grateful and stated how hopeful she was with us coming to help out the community.
